Just in case folks needed reminding, HBO Max dropped the final trailer for the third season of House of the Dragon to further hammer home the point that the body count will be high during the Targaryen civil war for the Iron Throne. As we’ve seen in the lead-up to the third season of the Game of Thrones prequel, these upcoming episodes are going to be less about politicking, diplomacy, and subterfuge than season two and more about all-out war. As such, the final trailer for House of the Dragon gave fans a peek at the extreme lengths both sides of the Targaryen family are willing to go to in order to ensure the other’s destruction and secure power. Despite Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) lofty insistence that her bloody rise to power will proceed “without further bloodshed,” the final trailer begs to differ. And if all the gnarly arm breaking, dragon flambéing, and snide remarks from Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) weren’t enough to sell how rocky of a road ahead Rhaenyra will have in her war effort, her opposition has also employed smear campaigns in the city streets to make her look unfit for the throne. Seeing her final moments in the trailer, she’s going to be all out of sorts among her own council to get what she wants, even if it means everyone has to suffer to see it done. To show HBO Max took viewers’ criticism seriously of season two stretching out its oncoming war a bit too far, season three teases that it’s going to hit the ground running with the Battle of the Gullet. For those who haven’t read the books and want to know what exactly that should mean in terms of your levels of excitement while remaining spoiler-free, co-creator and showrunner Ryan Condal’s interview with Entertainment Weekly hyped it up as “arguably the craziest episode of television ever made.” And it’s not just Condal teasing how action-packed season three of House of the Dragon will be.
Speaking with Collider, Cooke described the third season as “bigger and more ferocious than before. It starts off with a bang: the first two episodes were essentially supposed to be our finale last year, so you can just imagine that sort of energy.”
Hopefully, whatever may come of House of the Dragon‘s third season will see less messy behind-the-scenes turmoil than its second season did between its showrunners and George R.R. Martin, and keep its warring strictly on screen. After all, we’ve got one more season to go before House of the Dragon comes to an end. Here’s hoping it goes out with a bang. House of the Dragon season three premieres on HBO on June 21. Want more io9 news?
